How to Get Healthy This Summer (pt. 1)

Just because summer is already here doesn’t mean it’s too late to get that beach body you forgot to get earlier. I am the poster child for wanting to be healthy and look fit while also not wanting to do anything about it. But the first step is acceptance and now I can move onto the next step.

In high school I made the mistake of joining the cross country team thinking it would be easy… just running, right? Well I lied and said I had been a runner prior and was put into a group that ran 6 miles my first day. Needless to say running was forever ruined for me and when I hear the word “exercise,” my mind immediately goes to running and I therefore never exercised after that experience.

Here’s the truth about exercise:
If you want to be healthy, you need to exercise
Just because the word freaks you out doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it
Once you’re in shape, exercise can actually be… wait for it… FUN
You don’t need to run 3 miles and do 50 sit ups for your work out to be considered exercise

It took me awhile to understand this concept and actually believe I could like it. When I talk to most people, I get a common response: “I hate working out, but I like the results and how I feel afterwards.” Yes, it can be horrible while you’re doing it, but think of the outcome!


How to Get in Shape and Be Successful

Grab a notepad or pull up the Notes app in your phone and answer the following questions:

  1. Set a goal
    What’s your goal? Is it to lose 10 pounds? 20 pounds? Or maybe you want to get toned or just feel better. No matter what your goal is, write it down now. You can have as many goals as you want, just take note that some goals will take longer to reach than others!
  2. Find inspiration
    Everyone has someone they look up to. Find your own inspiration from fitness models or a celebrity you’re a fan of. For example, maybe you wish you has Alexis Ren’s body or Gigi Hadid’s. No matter who it is, write down their name now and look up their pictures later. Next, you’re going to print them out and put them somewhere that you look every day. This will keep you motivated to get fit.

You do not have to look like the models to be beautiful because you already are! Everyone’s body is different so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t look like a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Instead, check out Instagram for fitness models who are less likely to retouch their photos. Again, social media is not real life. Be realistic!
  3. Find inspiration in yourself
    You don’t need to look at pictures of models to keep you motivated! Instead, look on Pinterest at workout motivation and find quotes you like that keep you going! There are so many quotes and memes out there that will stick with you! Print those out and post them around your house!

  4. Find a workout that works for you
    Like I said earlier, certain exercises aren’t for everyone. But don’t let this stop you from reaching your goals! What has kept you from working out before? Was it a certain type of workout such as running or burpees? Be honest with yourself! The more honest you are, the more you can get out of this.
  5. Make it fun!
    Working out doesn’t need to be a chore. Once you find what works for you, you will start seeing results and eventually start enjoying it!
    Make a fun playlist of all the songs that get you pumped up!
    Get clothes that are cute that you want to wear!

    Another fun DIY is to figure out exercises you enjoy and write them all down. Next, pick up some popsicle sticks at your local craft store. Take 2 colored markers (i.e. red and blue) and color the top with one color (red) on half and the other color (blue) on the other half of the popsicle sticks. So say you have 100 sticks, color 50 red and the other 50 blue. Write down all the exercises onto the popsicle sticks of one color (such as red). On the other half of the popsicle sticks (blue), write down numbers ranging 1-100. You can do this however you want (by 5s, 10s, 20s, minutes, seconds, etc.) I recommend doing a number and time on each stick so it will work for any exercise. Put all the popsicle sticks in a jar with their colored ends pointing up and you’re all set! Next time you exercise, pull one of each color for each work out you do and follow what you pull (30 sit ups, 50 jumping jacks, 30 second plank, etc.) Pull a minimum of 5 exercises and do whatever you pull. This is a great way to add variety to your work out and have it be randomized so you aren’t dreading a certain thing! Don’t limit yourself to the easy stuff, push yourself too! Maybe you hate squats but put those in there too! You might not even pull it but you should still push yourself!
  6. Take a class
    Taking a class is a great way to get in shape. Find something you enjoy doing or are curious about. Maybe you’ve always wanted to try kickboxing or a swimming class. Going to a class will push you to do more because you are being watched by a teacher and there are other’s in your position as well! Check out your local gym and see if they offer any classes. Many gyms offer free classes so you have no excuse not to go!

  7. Determine your problem areas
    Look at yourself in the mirror… what do you see? What would you change? Do you want a flatter stomach? Stronger legs and arms? What do you want? Once you figure out what you want to work on, finding a work out will be easier!

  8. Google it
    A common phrase but so so useful! Simply Google “workouts for…” and fill in the blank (i.e. workouts for a flatter stomach). You will get hundreds of work outs on your specific wants and you’ll have options! Pinterest is another great place to find these workouts.
  9. Do it!
    Now that you’ve determined what you want, go after it! Nothing will come to you if you don’t work for it! Try to workout a minimum of 3 times a week or more. The more you exercise the faster you will see results! Set up a schedule or routine to keep you on track.
