I can’t be the only one who will occasionally describe what I’m doing with my makeup to an audience of no one as if I’m a beauty influencer on Youtube. I’ll tell you right now that I am not a beauty guru… you will not get 10% off Morphe with the code MICAELA… but I like to think I know a thing or 2 about makeup and skincare.
When you see my desk-turned-vanity, a few thoughts will pop into your mind including “how much have you spent on makeup?”, “when was the last time you cleaned that desk?”, and “there’s no way you use all of this.” I have spent too much money on makeup, I clean my desk weekly (but you’d never know it), and I try to use it all.
I don’t wear much makeup unless I’m going out, but there’s just something about makeup that I love… one could even say I collect it. Therefore, I think I’ve gone through enough makeup and tried enough products to have a good idea of what I like and what I don’t, and what works and what doesn’t. So if you are interested in my favorites of the past year, keep reading and let me know in the comments your favorite products of the year!
Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve ($45.00)
This year I became obsessed with skincare. Yes, there are worse things to become addicted to, but it’s hard to find products that work when everyone’s skin is so different. All I know is I want to look 10 years younger than I really am… or at least I want to start early so I can maintain good skin into my later years. I found this face cream and fell in love and clearly wasn’t the only one with over 1,800 reviews on Sephora with a 4.3/5 stars. I have really dry skin, but this has made my face so much softer and beats the dryness. I highly recommend this face cream for anyone, but especially for those in their 20s – early 30s as it is made specifically for that age range! It is a little pricey, but you only need a little bit each time so it will last you a long time.
Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil ($52.00)
Another skincare essential for me this year was another Fresh skincare product. As I mentioned earlier, I have really dry skin that gets even drier in the autumn and winter months. After doing some research, I picked up this face oil at Sephora and coughed over the cash. The way I see it, skincare is one of the most important things to maintain so splurging on quality products makes more sense than spending the same amount on a mascara or lipstick. I like to try use and use skincare all under the same brand so I know that they have similar ingredients and one won’t mess with the other. This face oil smells so refreshing and you only need 1-2 drops each time you use it. I have noticed a big difference in my skin, especially when I use both the lotion (above) and the face oil.
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($20.00)
This is a product that I swear by and recommend to all my friends and family whenever they start complaining about chapped lips. I get really bad chapped lips and it always is so much work to try to fix and heal… until I found this gem. You can find this at Sephora or on Amazon and you will never look back. All you need to do is put a good amount on at night before you go to sleep, and you will wake up with soft, healed, and plump lips. It smells very fruity (but there are other flavors available on Amazon if fruity isn’t your thing) but not in an overpowering way, and I have become obsessed. I am also a huge fan of this brand’s Water Sleeping Mask that was also a 2017 Allure Best of Beauty Winner.
No. 7 Beautiful Skin Cleansing Balm ($9.99)
This year I learned about cleansing balms and I was fascinated. For those of you who don’t know, a cleansing balm is usually solid or has a lotion-like consistency that mimics soap. A lot of brands carry cleansing balms, but my favorite is the one from No. 7 Cosmetics. I like to use this balm after I finish taking all my makeup off as a final check that I removed everything. What I like about this one is that you don’t need to rinse your face after using it like a lot of other cleansing balms require you to do. All you need to do is massage it into the face like you would do with a lotion, then gently rub it off with a towel and you’re done! You can find this at Target and Ulta or wherever No. 7 Cosmetics are sold.
Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask ($22.00)
You’re probably starting to see a theme with all of my skincare favorites: all for dry skin. But this face mask saved me more than once this year and I think anyone would enjoy it whether you have dry skin, normal skin, or oily skin. This face mask always makes my skin feel so fresh and soft after I’m done using it, and has a nice tingling feeling as I wear it. I like this mask a lot because it is affordable, it lasts a long time, and it’s comfortable to wear. This mask doesn’t harden and make it impossible to move your face. Instead, it goes on white and turns clear the longer you have it on. I like to wait until most of if not all the mask turns clear before I take it off. You can find this mask at the Glossier website and they also have another mask available as well.
Touch in Sol No Poreblem Primer ($18.00)
After hearing YouTubers rave about this primer, I knew I had to try it for myself. I have larger pores on my cheek area that I choose not to talk or think about that often but the fact is that they exist. There are tons of primers out there that I have loved and hated in the past, but this year my favorite was this one. It feels really smooth on the skin and doesn’t pill up like a lot of pore-filling primers tend to do because of the silicone. I just notice that every time I wear this under my makeup it’s a good makeup day and my skin looks a lot more even and smoothed out. I bought mine at Urban Outfitters but it is also available at Sephora.
Laura Mercier Candleglow Sheer Perfecting Powder ($38.00)
I stole this photo from The Beauty Look Book because let’s face it, I can’t take a picture that aesthetically pleasing. But this powder is so stunning I wish I could bathe in it. The Beauty Look Book did a more in-depth review with swatches of these powders so make sure you go check out her post if you’re interested in knowing more. I got this powder because I really was/am into the glowy skin look that was so popular this year. What I really love about this is you can use it as a setting powder or a highlighter and you will never look like you over did it. It gives a glow-from-within look and it’s impossible to put too much on. It comes in 6 shades so there is sure to be one that fits you perfectly. It also was another 2017 Allure Best of Beauty Winner, so that’s gotta count for something, right?
Lime Crime Venus Palette ($34.00)
Although this isn’t a new palette by any means, it was new to me this year and I’m so sad I didn’t buy it sooner. This particular palette has a cult following and for good reason, in my opinion. This palette is so beautiful and the colors in it are stunning. You can do so many different looks from day to night and have it look natural or grungy. The shadows are very pigmented and the quality is defiantly there. I find myself reaching for this palette all the time and it’s one that I will definitely be replacing once I hit pan. Lime Crime is now available on the Ulta website but can also be bought on the Lime Crime website.
Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer ($14.99)
Who would’ve thought that a drugstore bronzer would be the best one I’ve ever tried. I’ve talked about this bronzer before and I’m sure you’ve heard other people talk about it too so I’ll keep it short. This bronzer isn’t matte but it’s not shimmery either. It has a really pretty natural sheen to it that makes you look healthy and sun kissed. It also has a really nice smell to it that reminds me of the beach and summer, but I’ve used it all year round and I don’t think I’ll find a better bronzer for me. This is considered a drugstore product despite the price being a little up there, but places like CVS and Ulta always have great deals going on making it possible for you to get this for even less than the regular price.
SophX Ultra 24 Eyeshadow Palette by Makeup Revolution ($15.00)
This year one of my favorite YouTubers SophDoesNails released an eyeshadow palette along with a highlighting palette in collaboration with Makeup Revolution and I was very excited as you can imagine. Unfortunately, at the time it was only available in the UK and on UK websites and shipping was crazy high for me here in the US. But then it got to the point where I couldn’t wait and when I saw free shipping to the US on Tambeauty I went ahed and bought both the highlighter palette and eyeshadow palette. When it came I was sad. I was sad because I waited so long and I could’ve had this palette earlier. Soph did such an amazing job with this palette I was shook. For only $15 you get 24 eyeshadows and the quality is there. You can create so many different looks with this and I find myself using this one more than a $50 palette that I own. Every color you could possibly want and need is in here and I highly suggest checking this out if you want a quality palette for a fraction of the cost other palettes go for. If you’re living in the US, this palette has just become available on the Ulta website and hopefully will be in stores soon!
Luxe False Lash Collection by Sephora in Quill ($17.00)
2017 was the year that I tried out false lashes. Eyelash extensions were very big this year and I was intrigued. But I am a college student working part time and can’t afford to maintain extensions so I thought I would try out traditional false eyelashes. As a newbie to the game I didn’t want crazy big lashes that everyone would notice. I wanted something subtle but there that would make people think “are those real?” So I started hunting in Sephora but I quickly realized that figuring out what lashes will really look like once their on is a challenge. So after about an hour I narrowed it down between 2 and got the Sephora Collection Luxe False Lashes in Quill. After many failed attempts of getting them on I finally was successful and wore them out for my friends birthday. I fell in love instantly when I saw how much more put together my makeup looked and how much these lashes made a difference despite not being dramatic. I have since tried other false lashes but these have been my favorite so far. If you’re like me and want to try out false lashes, have some to wear for special occasions, but don’t want anything too out there, definitely take a look at the style Quill. They’re fairly cheap and if you take care of them you can get a lot of uses out of them before purchasing a new pair.
L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara ($7.29)
This year I re-discovered an old favorite of mine and fell in love all over again. Not only is this mascara completely affordable but I actually love this mascara more than a lot of my high end mascaras. I love how this mascara applies: it’s never clumpy, it’s super black, gives my lashes tons of volume, and looks natural oddly enough. Now don’t let the word “natural” scare you… it’s not like putting vaseline on your eyes and having that natural look. But because it fans out the lashes so beautifully, it looks like you aren’t wearing tons of product. Another plus to this mascara is that it layers beautifully. I have yet to have a bad experience with this mascara (knock on wood).
Urban Decay Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara ($20.00)
This past summer I visited Hawaii and in the months leading up to it was looking everywhere for waterproof makeup that would actually stay put. I normally hate waterproof mascara because I find that either A) they don’t work or B) they apply weird and are impossible to remove. I then found the holy grail of waterproof mascara and you’re looking at it. Not only do I use this mascara when I go to the beach, swim, when it’s hot, etc. but I also use it on an everyday basis. I’m not sure why, but this mascara applies unlike any waterproof one I have tried and stays put all say with out any smudging or flaking. Again, this mascara applies in a sort of “natural” way because it doesn’t make your eyelashes clump up and just gives them a nice lift. It didn’t fail me in the water and it hasn’t failed me. You can find this at Ulta or on the Urban Decay website.
Glossier Wowder ($22.00)
This year was the year I found my ride-or-die powder. Glossier has been killing it with their products and I will be mentioning a few more favorites later on. First of all, this packaging is amazing. It has mesh at the opening so you don’t get too much powder and make a mess, but the cap also has a stopped so it doesn’t all come out while it’s closed. This powder comes in 3 colors (light/medium, dark/deep, and rich) which surprisingly is more universal than you might think. I have the light/medium shade and it works beautifully and seamlessly on my pale skin but also works for friends who borrow it who have a deeper skin tone than me. The powder is sheer enough that that color doesn’t matter as much as a loose foundation. I love this powder because no matter how much I use to set my under eyes and face, it never seems to look cakey and you can’t even tell there’s powder on your face. It is so light-weight and makes the skin look so velvety and flawless that I will never try another powder again. You can find this on the Glossier website along with a recommended brush for application (but any brush will do!)
Other Glossier favorites: Boy Brow, Cloud Paint Blush, Haloscope, and Lip Gloss
Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick ($24.00)
One of my favorite lipsticks this year was the Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick. I find all the available colors to be gorgeous and they look good on everyone! These lipsticks last all day long and I love the doe foot applicator. I have somewhat uneven lips so it’s always frustrating for me to try to put liquid lipstick on and then have it look uneven. With this applicator, it makes applying so much easier and it practically evens my lips out for me! You can find this at Sephora, Macy’s, Ulta, and on the Smashbox website.
theBalm’s Mary Lou Manizer ($24.00)
I had so many favorite highlighters this year and it was impossible to just pick one. But one I kept gravitating towards was this one by theBalm. Again, this has a huge cult following and it’s clear to see why. This one worked out great for me since I have such fair skin, but there are several shades available to get that natural glow for all skin tones. This highlighter is great because it can look natural, but can also be built up to blind the astronauts in space. I bought mine on Amazon but you can find it on theBalm’s website.
I hope you all found this helpful! Let me know your favorite products of 2017 in the comments below and I’ll see you all in my next post!
